I did not intend to write today, and I do not have time to take this deep. But Russia’s unprovoked, unjustifiable, and inhumane attack on the sovereign nation of Ukraine has me thinking about our own national guardrails. This morning I read Thomas Friedman’s op-ed in the New York Times. He made a point about Russia and China that ties into something I’ve been thinking about as I watch Putin’s crimes unfold. Here is what Friedman had to say:
Excellent column! BTW, the recent book by Rep. Jamie Raskin ("Unthinkable") makes abundantly clear how close we came in January 2021 to a presidential declaration of martial law and a subversion of our separation of powers.
